Hacienda Courtyards

Towering walls covered in flowering vines, graceful arcades, carved stone columns, tranquil water fountains and seductive palm-lined pools create the serene oasis that is the Mexican courtyard.

The rich time-honored textures of stone, earth, wood, and tile lend depth and distinction to courtyard spaces, proudly revealing old-world character marks and age. From hand-chiseled stone pavers to unique stucco techniques and hand-hewn beams that support clay tile porch roofs, the outdoor architecture of Mexico’s courtyards is characterized by a distinct vocabulary of design materials and textures dictated by geographical location and available natural resources. Read more about courtyard design in our book, Hacienda Courtyards (2007, Gibbs Smith Publisher).
